Media Center

Mission Statement

The mission of the media center is to support our school goals for each child by providing an atmosphere that promotes lifelong learning through a variety of reading and information literacy programs.

At Dr. W. J. Creel School, we have an open Media Center where students are able to check out books anytime during the school day and on any day with their teachers' permission. Students are expected to checkout leisure reading books at least once per week.

There is a school-wide Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time each day from 2:10-2:30p.m. During DEAR, students are expected to be in their classrooms reading independently or being read to.

The Media Center has twenty-two computers available to students. These computers may be used for OPAC (electronic catalog of media center materials), computerized quizzes, internet research (with adult supervision & signed AUP on file), word processing, and a variety of student learning software.

Volunteers

We welcome and depend on our volunteers to help us with shelving books, working at Book Fairs, preparing books for shelving and helping with other special events. The Media Center is a vibrant and rewarding place to volunteers. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application online (in the school office with a driver's licence) and be approved by the district.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a literacy program designed to encourage students to read independently with a component included to test their comprehension of the story. Students read books that are on their independent reading level. They earn points as they pass comprehension tests given on each book. Incentives are given to encourage continued reading.
